It was a strange game for any match from any era, it was one of them games which I’m sure would have been called off hours (if not a day) before kick-off, perhaps there was nothing funny about the 3-0 result but the conditions in which the Rovers and Blades players where forced to endure can be nothing more than described as barbaric.

Sheffield United lost men due to the conditions, and without substitutions, the Blades were forced to carry on with limited numbers and eventually succumbed to a 3-0 defeat in this Football League One fixture on Saturday, 29th October 1932.

Ward started his career in Lancashire with Manchester City in 1989 though only made three substitute appearances, he left for Leicester City in August 1991 in a deal worth £80,000. In between then he took a loan move to Wales where he scored twice in five games for Wrexham. Even his Filbert Street stint brought too few appearances; not even joining Blackpool on loan
could get his career to a flying start. Ashley was sold to Crewe Alexandra for £80,000 in December 1992 having played 15 times for the Foxes...

James Massey started his football career at Denaby United, its unclear has to  how he went their as the Wolverhampton born goalkeeper found himself miles from  home. Massey moved to Sheffield Wednesday via Doncaster Rovers after being spotted by  a club official who, in turn recommended him to the Sheffield club, the official  had been refereeing a game at Loughborough at the time...

Tommy Clare was considered to be one of the first professional footballers at Stoke Football   Club, in fact he was one of seven, the plucky full-back signed up along with; Phillip Birch, Edgar Montford, Ted Smith, George Shutt, Alf Edge and Bernard Rhodes in August 1885; with each player in turn agreeing to a fee of half a crown per game (equivalent to 12p). Even in those days, although the term ‘football agents’ hadn’t yet been  thought of, money still became an issue, and when the club attempted to  introduce a different payroll for more experienced or senior players, they went  on strike...

James Harrop was born in 1884; in Sheffield and played for his hometown club despite an unsuccessful attempt as an amateur with Sheffield Wednesday went onto play  a number of games with United – their rivals from across the City. A son of a Yorkshire farmer Harrop went onto become a successful  professional footballer – helping Aston Villa win the FA Cup in 1913
and 1920. A  cool and crafty defender he inspired the Villa Park club to their 1913 cup final  victory, but missed there glorious day seven years later through injury.

Goalkeeper Jack Alderson had a very illustious career with Sheffield United and Crystal Palace, playing over 375 games in the Football League as well as being listed amongst the Eagles top three choice keepers during their centenary year - he also represented his country...

Roy Massey netted a hat-trick in this Football League Cup match in August 1969 between Redaing and Colchester United at the former Elm Park ground after drawing the initial fixture 1-1.
